2013 Zinfandel, Nance's Vineyard, Alexander Valley
Top wine ratings:
Silver Medal from the Sonoma Harvest Fair 2015.
94 points, Wine & Spirits Magazine
This wine was selected as a "Year's Best Zinfandel" in the October 2015 issue. This Zinfandel was the highest rated Sonoma Zinfandel on the list. It was also one of the most affordable Sonoma wines.
This fresh zin comes from rangy head-trained vines planted in 1999 on a volcanic hillside just above the Alexander Valley bench, where afternoon breezes from the Russian River Valley cool the sun-warmed south-facing slope. Wine maker Micah Wirth's light touch with the fruit emphasizes balance rather than extraction. It's silky and just plain delicious, fine tannins framing a spicy red raspberry and paprika tang that inundates the senses. For those who enjoy zinfandel in an elegant mode, it's a revelation.
About the Vineyard:
Nestled up against a southwest-facing hillside, the ten-acre vineyard that Dr. Douglas and Nancy Ousterhout own in Healdsburg, California contains five acres of Zinfandel planted in 1999. Morning fog from the Petaluma Gap and Russian River Valley helps to preserve the acidity in the grapes in this Alexander Valley vineyard. The cool nights and sunny afternoons provide for a long growing season, which also keeps the sugar levels from spiking. Coupled with meticulous farming and careful attention to the sugar levels, Nance's Vineyard produces a unique California red Zinfandel that is medium-bodied with good acidity and complex flavors. Also beehives, vegetable gardens, as well as fruit and olive trees flourish on the property. Read how Dr. Ousterhout gained an appreciation for California wine here.
